5,000 calories

This article in this week's NYT Magazine was fascinating to me, 3 brief profiles of a weight lifter, a synchronized swimmer, and a triathlete... their daily training regimen, and what each ate respectively. The exception was the swimmer, whose daily intake was 2500 calories a day.

I took a little issue with the clichéd choices of athletes, though. Why did they have to profile a woman who also happened to be a synchronized swimmer? Why couldn't they have gotten a female triathlete and a male synchronized swimmer? Would it be breaking too many stereotypes? And, you'll note, it's only the female who merited a little blurb on "What's in her carry-on to Greece." (Ritz crackers, Chocolate Power Bars & Gummi Bears. Quite precious, no?)

I was actually surprised at how little 5K calories seemed to be -- perhaps it was all those energy bars taking up a sizeable portion of the daily caloric allotment ... they do seem to be convenient, fast, energy-boosting snacks that don't weigh one down that much. Not too many vegetables either, except for salads here and there. These are not diets I envy, for sure... Posted by claudine at August 10, 2004 12:22 AM
