10th Annual In the Street Festival

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2004, FROM 11 AM TO 6PM
500 Ellis Street,
San Francisco, CA

Artists will use rooftops, blacktops, hotel lobbies, building exteriors. A full day of performances, interactive art installations, a sculpture garden for kids will provide an assortment of activities for all. Darryl Smith, ITS co founder and director says, "The Tenderloin is the city's most diverse neighborhood and represents a microcosm of the world. The ITS Festival participates in the re-emergence of the Tenderloin as the City's cultural center by encouraging residents to participate and reclaim their streets."

Saturday features over 75 local artists and highlights include LOCO BLOCO'S YOUTH GROUP; AYA DE LEON'S in "Aya De Leon is Running for President," a campaign speech remix in stand up poetry and hip hop theater, directed by by Ellen Sebastian Chang.

JULIA GLANVILLE'S "A Lodged for Dislodged Motions and Artifacts," built by hand, an urban earthen structure for reflection in Cohen Alley. Community members are invited to participate in the design and construction of this dwelling. AMARA TABOR-SMITH and CRISTAL BROWN, of URBAN BUSH WOMEN will perform a new dance, "ENDURING PROCESS" expressing the devastation and transformation of internalized oppression. DAN WOLF and TOMMY SHEPHERD, members of the award winning Hip Hop Collective FELONIOUS: onelovehiphop, present various beats and rhymes from their upcoming play, Stateless, which combines hip hop music and vaudeville with German and Jewish history. "Stateless" is a theatrical exploration of how memory and fate fuel creativity to transcend the effects of war. Other DJS include Q-ZEN and, SAMARA HALPERIN; ZACCHO DANCE YOUTH GROUP will feature 5 young aerial dancers ages 10 and 13, set to Nino Rota's rich score La Strada: Suite. The dancers swing, spin and weave their way through a 16 ft. suspended ladder creating a beautiful display of technical skill and poetic imagery. KEITH HENNESSY/CIRCO ZERO will perform new aerial choreography from a crane. Join ALAN FRIAS and MIND OVER MATTER for hip hop. Having problems with someone? JOHN FORD'S sculpted EAR will listen to you . Ford has over 15 years experience as a mediator. Visual artists will be conducting interactive workshops and site specific installations along the 500 block of Ellis and in Cohen Alley, such as KAMAU AMU PATTON who will be making altars with the public: T.L.A. (True Love Always), R.I.P. (Rent in Peace), and A.K.A. (also known as). MIRIAM STAHL will be making screenprinted bags filled with medicinal herbs like lavender and rosemary. Stahl's goal is to give out 1000 screenprinted bags of herbs for free. And don't miss JAMES ORLANDO'S Mobile Art Gallery or MICHAEL SWAINE'S "Culturally Specific Beverage Booth."
