Humboldt Batizado
M.Canguru's batizado was beautiful, both in surroundings and ceremony. I'd like to go again, and apparently there's talk of extending it to a weeklong event next year. I'm not sure I could be there for a whole week, but I was surprised to find that yes, with the appropriate amenities and camping accroutrements (thank goodness for Pirata!), this sleeping-in-the-outdoors thing is not so bad after all. Even the sounds of the late-night midnight-to-5am early-Saturday roda were soothing, the 530am Sunday morning Batucada wake-up call disturbing but amusing. What was even funnier was that, in comparing notes with the rest of the campers at breakfast, it seems that almost none of them actually got out of their cozy caves despite the booming of the drums, the shaking of their shelters, the kicking of the tents. I loved the campfire, the spontaneous singing, the walk down to the clear cool shallow river banked with stones. I loved the camaraderie, the axé, the dancing, the meeting of capoeiristas from all over, the sharing of substances, of experiences.
The accomplishments of Canguru's students -- particularly of his top alunos -- were impressive, and only served to show that I need to train more, truly get better at my game, work harder on my music, and learn Portuguese.
Batizados are addicting. I'm glad I went.
