Blue Plate

Sam of Becks & Posh recently posted on Blue Plate, one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco. I've been there multiple times and have never been disappointed. It's located in the outer Mission, near Bernal Heights, and I consider it similar to Luna Park (another favourite) and Emmy's Spaghetti Shack close by -- really great food at reasonable prices, all with a very down to earth, cozy-casual feel that I believe epitomizes the best of San Francisco dining. On all Hallow's Eve eve Nora & I caught Spicy's show, "Gruesome Tales of Death & Destruction" at the Odeon. We got out around 930pm, and, instead of having to grab a burrito at one of the inumerable taqueiras that surround the area, we were gratified to find a fantastic alternative just across the street.

We hadn't had dinner, but were not very hungry, and felt that we just had room for an entree each. We were seated next to the front window, where some fabulous eerie blueish light poured down on the table and we had a great view of various costumed revelers heading off to their respective parties for the evening.

I ordered, and received, this absolutely enormous lamb shank, topped with sauteed rapini and served over super-creamy polenta and a pool of rich rich rich ultra-flavourful reduction of somethingorother.

Nora chose the meatloaf, a Blue Plate "classic" -- the menu changes daily, but this is one of the items that remains a constant.

And finally, here are a couple of other pictures with the flash...

mmmm, looks yummy! Found you listed on "OnoKineGrindz" blog. I'm interested in finding a local blog so thought I would check yours out. I'm in Mt. View. I'm not allowed to get to the City very often because I wrecked our car while my husband & I were dating. We were on our way to get piroshki at Tiblisi on Geary... opps! =o( It's like pulling teeth to get up there now. So when I do get there I just go to the usual places. I was horrified when I found out that Panelli Brothers closed, I worked a few doors down 20+ years ago as a kid. We were poor back then so we would buy one mixed meat sandwich and a couple extra rolls then split up the meat between the rolls. Awesome stuff. Ahern's bakery, gone. That was the first place I ate in the City when I was about 10 years old or so. That was about 25 years ago. Thanks for the word about Blue Plate. For good lamb I might be able to get my husband that far... maybe... Is it kid friendly?

Hi Claudine,

The lamb shank looks good. The meat looks so "melt-in-the-mouth" tender. And the meatloaf...ahhh! Can you Fedex some to me? =P

Hi Jo,
Sorry ti too me a moment to respond... too many things going on this weekend. Blue Plate is close to the freeway, so that might be another incentive to make the journey...
I'd say it's kid friendly, since the staff are so nice. I have to admit that on the times I've visited I can honestly say that I have not seen any families with children. Perhaps you could call them to find out? How old are are your young ones?

Santos - couldn't remember if there was a description for the sauce, but it was terribly good. :)

Reid, I'll fedex you some Blue Plate lamb shank if you FedEx me some of that sari sari soup from Dalisay... ;)
