This Day of the Dead exhibition has divided the gallery into four directions depicting the Fifth Direction in the center: our communion with death. East walls call the element of air and are dedicated to the souls of children using the circle as a unifying symbol of white, South walls call upon fire and honor the souls of youth dressed in reds, using the triangle as their universal symbol; West walls bring the element of water, representing souls of adults, lavished in hues of blues, grounded by the symbol of the square; North calls earth, and is dedicated to the souls of elders and ancestors, regally presented in majestic purples, and adorned by the four directional cross, and; Center, creates the Spiral, depicting the soul of the community, our own soul, in shades of greens.
I decided, at the last minute around 4pm, when I was already in the SoMA and having finished visiting the DotD installation at SOMARTS, to drop by Capp St. and our Encontro. I was glad I did. It was good to see Mestre, and my group, and the crazy boys Mestre brought for our benefit: Kibe and Virgulino, Denis & Muriel, and Mestre Canguru came later on in the evening with Cigana... a Cordoa de Ouro familia gathering indeed. It did a great deal to lift my spirits and was surprised to realise that it was close to 1am when I finally got home... One last note: It's been really gratifying to be able to take pictures in galleries... I've been reprimanded/ burned so many times in so many venues for taking or attempting to take some photographs -- even without a flash... I'd just like to urge everyone to support art that aids and abets other art! The Mission exhibit above only lasts a few more days -- and it's only $2; The Somarts exhibit (pictures later) lasts until the 6th, I believe... posted by claudine |Added at 9:29 AM| | photographs, day of the dead exhibits, san francisco
